Upon the invitation of the Rotary Club of Wellington North, Philippine Ambassador Virginia H. Benavidez made a presentation on “The Philippines and New Zealand: A People Based Relationship” before officials and members of the Rotary Club of Wellington North on 16 July 2015 at the Wellington Bridge Club, Thorndon, Wellington. The Rotary Club of Wellington North, chartered in 1965, is a fellowship of business and professional people who accept the ideal of service, individually and collectively, as the basis for success and happiness in business and community life. The group supports many organizations in the local community and in developing countries and facilitates international youth exchanges and scholarships.

Ambassador Benavidez discussed in her presentation the continuing close relations of the Philippines and New Zealand, and the contributions of the Filipino community to New Zealand. She highlighted the varied composition of the Filipino community in New Zealand, their importance to the New Zealand life, economy and society and the continued promotion of the Philippines – New Zealand people-to-people connectivity. “This year, the Philippines and New Zealand mark forty nine years of warm and long standing relations underpinned by enduring people-to-people ties. What makes our bonds closer is our shared adherence to democratic values and principles, good governance, rules-based approach, peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law, peace-building and respect for human rights in the face of challenges to our regional and global environment and security,” Ambassador Benavidez stated.

Ambassador Benavidez also reiterated a grateful nation’s deep appreciation to New Zealand’s unprecedented groundswell of sympathy and support and its continuing solidarity and assistance in the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan, which are crucial to the on-going rebuilding and rehabilitation of affected areas in Central Visayas. She proudly stated that “Filipinos continue to make deep connections and contribute to building stronger, vibrant, diverse and inclusive communities across the North and South Islands. The Philippines and New Zealand have done a lot together in 49 years and we can do more together. Indeed, the futures of our two countries and peoples are woven with each other.”

A lively and interactive open forum followed her presentation.

The Rotary Club of Wellington North, through its President and former Ambassador of New Zealand to the Philippines, Mr. Graeme Waters, thanked Ambassador Benavidez for a comprehensive and enlightening presentation and continued support to the Rotary Club of Wellington North.
