Philippine Ambassador pays homage to New Zealand earthquake victims and urges preparedness

/ news

Philippine Ambassador to New Zealand Jesus S. Domingo joined in the ceremony for the victims of the 2011 Canterbury earthquake, held on 22 February 2017 in Christchurch City. A new memorial monument was unveiled to honor the memory of the 185 fatalities of the quake, which hit Christchurch in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand on 22 February 2011. 11 Filipinos were among those killed in the quake, most of whom were nurses studying at the time in central Christchurch.

Ambassador Domingo presented a memorial wreath at the monument on behalf of the Philippine Government and Filipino People, and met with relatives of the victims. He took the opportunity to remind the 50,000-strong Filipino Community in New Zealand that the country remains seismically active, and should be prepared for another major earthquake to strike at any time. Domingo added that Filipinos should also remind their relatives and loved ones in the Philippines, that they should also be prepared. He cited the recent earthquakes in North Canterbury in New Zealand, in Davao, and the threat of a major quake in Metro Manila.
